Pakistan's batting legend Hanif Mohammad said Deepak Shodhan's sparkling 110 was an innings which inspired a young batsman like him, who was playing only in the fifth Test of his first series at Eden Gardens in Calcutta.

"We felt Shodhan (then 24) would be nervous and won't last long after we reduced India to 179 for six. But he surprised us with his supreme confidence," Hanif (81) told mid-day from Karachi yesterday.

"Shodhan proved that he had all the shots in the book and we were a bit surprised that he could hook too. It was a special innings and I shall never forget it. I am deeply saddened by the news of his death," added Hanif.
