Little did Sourav Ganguly know that the recently installed elevator at his home would be used to take him to the first floor of his apartment.
Ganguly got the lift in place for his ill father but yesterday, he had to use it himself due to a severe ankle strain suffered during Wednesday's IPL match against Delhi Daredevils.
He had a memorable match u2013 a half century, a critical run out which sent back Delhi captain Gautam Gambhir and a fine comeback win.
Interestingly, he didn't know how he picked up the injury. He realised that he damaged his ankle when he removed his shoes on his return to the team hotel. Since the pain was unbearable, he called on Kolkata Knight Riders' physiotherapist Andrew Leipus.
When Ganguly returned home yesterday, he couldn't walk from his car to the gate of his residence. A wheelchair had to be summoned and that's how he reached the lift. His mother and father spent a lot of time yesterday applying ice on their son's injured area.
The injury forced him to stay behind in Kolkata while his teammates travelled to Bangalore for tomorrow's clash with Royal Challengers. He is expected to leave for the Garden City today.
"It is an important game so how can I stay away? The tournament is quite open now and we have a good chance. It's tough but possible," said Ganguly.
