"Do your work with the bat and the ball, not your mouth." That's the message former New Zealand captain and batting great John Reid has for the current Australian team.
"Do your work with the bat and the ball, not your mouth." That's the message former New Zealand captain and batting great John Reid has for the current Australian team.
The Aussies are on tour for the Chappell-Hadlee series comprising one-day matches.
Reid was reacting to fast bowler Mitchell Johnson getting physical with Kiwi batsman Scott Styris in Wednesday's first one-dayer in Napier. A report in the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Reid as saying, "Johnson was the aggressor but he's mad headbutting someone with a helmet on. Generally, the Australian team looks good but there are a handful of idiots who need to be reined in." Reid, a former International Cricket Council match referee, added: "In my time going around the world, Australia was always the worst at sledging. In fact, I'd consider the Chappell brothers to be its architects back in the 1970s." NZ coach Mark Greatbatch recalled a strange incident during his playing days but was not so spicy as Reid. "The last time I played against Australia, Merv Hughes spat on me. But we had a beer at the end of the day. It's competitive, it's great. It's Australia-New Zealand," said Greatbatch.
