Kolkata: Eden Gardens joined the likes of the Wankhede Stadium and the WACA in Perth when several stands at the historic stadium were named after players and administrators yesterday. Four sons of the soil got their due as the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) made the most of the presence of cricket stars from other parts of the country and beyond.

Kapil Dev was at hand to unveil the glow sign that had the stand to the right of the pavilion dedicated to Sourav Ganguly, the most iconic player from the state, while Sunil Gavaskar pressed the button to unveil the Pankaj Roy Stand. Roy had held the Test record for the opening stand with Vinoo Mankad for 52 years before South Africa's Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie surpassed their 413 in 2008.
Cricket administrators Jagmohan Dalmiya and BN Dutt too had stands named after them, and it is believed a couple of war heroes will be similarly honoured.
Always alert to the many occasions as they pop up, from Sachin Tendulkar's swansong to the re-entry of South Africa to the international stage, the CAB grasped the opportunity to also felicitate MS Dhoni, who recently gave up the India captaincy in the limited overs formats, received the memento from Kapil, the only other WC-winning skipper from the country. Coming as it did during the break between innings, only his non-playing teammates were on the ground to witness the short ceremony, but the chants of 'Dhoni Dhoni!' from the packed terraces lent the occasion the magic it deserved.
