VVS Laxman's mother has thanked Ian Chappell, who she believes was the first to call her son Very, Very Special Laxman.
“We must say ‘thank you’ to Chappell for giving this title to my son,” Dr V Satyabhama said from Hyderabad on Saturday afternoon.
Chappell has watched Laxman play from the commentary box since 1996. “To us, our son is Very, Very Special because he is very modest and simple. He does not talk much and always respects elders. He prays twice-a-day and has all good qualities,” the retired radiologist added.

Had he not been a cricketer, Laxman would have been a doctor, like his parents. His father Dr V Shantharam is a reputed physician in Hyderabad. “Laxman took two days to decide his future. He had to appear for his Medical entrance exam and at the same time, he got a call to join the under-19 team in England. With his father’s consent, he decided to be a cricketer,” said Dr V Satyabhama.
