The Mumbai Cricket Association's (MCA) new rule has made none other than its former secretary Vilas Godbole happy.

The MCA on Monday decided to extend the two-year wait period in local cricket to three years for non-resident Mumbaikars before being eligible for Mumbai teams.

"It is better late than never. If the rule is followed properly then I don't think any cricketer from outside Mumbai would want to come here," Godbole told MiD DAY yesterday.

Godbole had first raised an objection when Gujarat's Munaf Patel was picked for the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team in 2004.

"The two-year rule was in existence since many years but it was hardly followed. When I raised an objection in the general body meeting, they did not accept it.

"Earlier also, Ramesh Saxena another cricketer from outside Mumbai wanted to play for our Ranji team. I had protested and he was not allowed," Godbole recalled.
