In a game that was stunted by City's negative approach, both sides struggled to make an impact on the game with a Carlos Tevez free kick and Dimitar Berbatov volley being the only two instances of note.

The home team started the most assured with every player getting a touch inside the first couple of minutes and working the ball slowly up field until Carlos Tevez, back after a brief return to Argentina picked up the ball just outside the area and with his first touch took himself away from Nemanja Vidic as the United defence opened up for him but the striker hesitated when pulling the trigger and the chance quickly went. United were slow to get themselves into the game and had to wait until the 15 minutes mark for any sort of test for opposition goalkeeper Joe Hart when Nani sent a tame shot in from 30 yards.
