New Zealand batting sensation Jesse Ryder was beaming with the "I own up to my mistakes" citation while addressing reporters here yesterday.

When asked repeatedly about his controversies, the talented southpaw, who claims he has not touched alcohol for over 100 days, said: "I am trying to move on, become a better cricketer and a better person. I am trying to be more professional, training harder, keeping away from all the bad habits that I used to get into.

"I can see that (since quitting alcohol) my concentration levels have increased."

In fact, New Zealand's media manager interrupted Ryder's session, asking the reporters to stick to cricket.

Just then, Ryder looked at the manager and indicated that he was prepared for questions of this nature, since it was difficult to change people's negative perception about him.

Another drunken or brawl episode could mean the end of the road for this gifted cricketer.
