The former India skipper, who made a dash to the dressing room minutes after the four-wicket loss, spent around 30 minutes with the Mumbai team.

A player said: "He told us to stay positive and keep the dressing room atmosphere healthy. He said it was just the first match of the season. There was no need to dampen the mood as the Ranji Trophy hasn't been lost."

Another player said: "There are a lot of youngsters in the team. Sachin spoke about the Mumbai pride and valuing every performance."

Mumbai coach Pravin Amre said: "Tendulkar is a role model to everyone. I requested him to spend some time with this team and share his views. It was decided yesterday itself. It has nothing to do with our loss today. He was supposed to come irrespective of the result."
