After a stand of 170 between opener Usman Khawaja (98) and captain Steve Smith (74) led Australia to 265 for seven, Samuels hit 92 to form the bedrock of the successful West Indies chase.

Along the way he exchanged words with Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, stirring memories of April’s World T20 final when he resumed his rivalry with Ben Stokes before gleefully watching Carlos Brathwaite’s last-over assault on the England
all-rounder’s bowling from the non-striker’s end.

Wade eventually ran Samuels out, but not before he had seen his side within 26 runs of victory.

Aaron Finch fell in the first over of the Australia innings for a golden duck but Khawaja and Smith batted for two thirds of the 50 overs.

Khawaja was run out two short of a century, going for a third off a George Bailey sweep, and despite Bailey’s innings of 55 off 56 balls Australia were slightly short of par. Jason Holder, Kieron Pollard and Brathwaite took two wickets each.
