Earlier, centuries from Michael Clarke 168 and Marcus North 112* had helped Australia declare their innings with a huge total of 459 for 5. The visitors then took a firm grip on the match, dismissing the hosts for just 157 in their first innings. Following on, the hosts had scored 266 for five at lunch, with skipper Daniel Vettori batting on 60 and Brendon McCullum batting on 39.
