In the Asia Cup 2025 match against Hong Kong, Sri Lanka secured a victory by four wickets at the Dubai International Stadium.
Despite winning the match, Sri Lanka's skipper Charith Asalanka has expressed disappointment, citing concerns about early bowling overs. He also said that a sudden batting collapse should be one thing that his team should avoid during the matches.
Speaking during the post-match presentation, Asalanka said, "The heart was in the mouth (at the end). Disappointed about a few things. First three overs in the bowling. Then, with the bat, in the 16th over, we lost a few wickets, including mine. Consistently, these things can't happen even in the shorter formats. We are professionals, and we have to do much better. Credit to them, they batted well. There is pressure playing against every side".
Pathum Nissanka was named the "Player of the Match" for his crucial contributions. Facing 44 deliveries, the right-hander scored 68 runs, which was laced with six boundaries and two maximums.
Earlier in the match, Hong Kong posted a total of 149 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs. Nizakar Khan and Anshuman Rath were the top scorers for the side. Having played 46 balls, Rath accumulated 48 runs, with the help of four boundaries. On the other hand, Nizakat garnered 52 runs in 38 balls, including four boundaries and two maximums.
Later, riding high on Nissanka's knock, the Lankans successfully chased the target by scoring 153 runs for the loss of six wickets in 18.5 overs.
With this win, Sri Lanka tops Group B with two wins in two matches, while Hong Kong is out of the competition having lost three in three games.
Hong Kong skipper Yasim Murtaza also expressed satisfaction with his side's performance, stating he was proud of the way the boys stood up and believed a few dropped catches cost them the game.
"To be honest, I am proud of the way the boys stood up today. We missed a few chances. In the end, the way they fought was good. We were looking for 150-160. We dropped a few catches, and that cost us the game. The positive thing is to be playing on the big stage. Dream come true. Once we go back, we will work on a few things," Murtaza said.
