Former India opener Virender Sehwag has urged Indian cricket fans to be patient with this new-look Indian Test team that lost their opening fixture to England at Headingley by five wickets. The Shubman-Gill led side saw Ben Stokes’s England chase down a daunting target of 371 — the second-highest successful run chase at Leeds — with relative ease, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Despite the result, Sehwag believes the fight shown by a team shorn of the experience provided by the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, was impressive. “I’m happy to see a new-look team fight for India. There was a good fight between bat and ball till Day 5. That’s why we say Test cricket is the best format. You can lose a game, but I would request Indian cricket lovers not to get upset. This is cricket. The great game can surprise you at any time,” Sehwag, 46, told mid-day here on Wednesday.
The dashing batter, who featured in 104 Tests and scored at an average of 49.34, was impressed by India’s batting and Jasprit Bumrah’s mastery with the ball. He hoped the tourists can turn the tables on the hosts in the upcoming games. “The Indian batters scored five centuries in the Test and Bumrah took five wickets, but still [unfortunately] England won. There was a question mark over the two openers, but Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul batted with confidence. It’s a big relief for new captain Shubman Gill, who also batted with confidence in the first innings. We have to be patient for good results. I am hopeful [that India will win soon],” Sehwag concluded.
