While Indian cricket fans are known to be a highly emotional bunch who are known to get upset quickly at team failures, it came as a pleasant surprise to see them supporting an apologetic Rishabh Pant on social media on Thursday.
A day after India lost the second Test to South Africa at Guwahati, suffering an embarrassing 0-2 series whitewash, skipper Pant apologised to his 20-million plus combined following on social media platforms ‘X’ and Instagram. “There’s no shying away from the fact that we didn’t play good enough cricket over the last two weeks. As a team and as individuals, we always want to perform at the highest level and bring smiles to billions of Indians. Sorry, we couldn’t live up to expectations this time, but sport teaches you to learn, adapt and grow — both as a team and as individuals. Representing India is the greatest honour of our lives. We know what this team is capable of and will work hard, regroup, refocus and reset to come back stronger and better as a team and individuals,” Pant wrote on Instagram.

The wicketkeeper-batter received thousands of responses with most fans empathising with him and Team India, while others offered positive advice on where he went wrong and what needs to be done to get better. “Fans will always back you, but please start taking the game as seriously as the support you get. You guys know cricket better than anyone, but the intent hasn’t looked right. We need a much stronger comeback — no excuses this time,” wrote one online user.
“We will always support this team, but two whitewashes at home hurts. India is a fortress, and we expect better from our players. Hopefully, this tough phase becomes a lesson, not a pattern. Work hard, fix the basics, play domestic cricket, and come back with the hunger we know you have. We want you to shine again not for applause, but for the pride of the tricolour,” wrote another follower. There was some constructive criticism: “What about bringing new individuals into the team instead of sticking with the same failed IPL performers? Those who are performing in domestic cricket are equal Indians and deserve support from you. Have a look at their stats, they deserve better.”
“There’s nothing more powerful than owning your mistakes. But what really creates growth is a proper retrospective where we look at three things: (1) What went well (2) What needs improvement (3) Action items to fix it. Apply this, and the comeback writes itself,” read another positive message.
