Prithvi Shaw
At just 26, life has been a plethora of ups and downs for opening batter Prithvi Shaw. After a buzzing start to his first class and India career, making a fine debut in all three formats and earning big bucks from Delhi Daredevils at IPL 2018, the lows hit even quicker and harder. His form dipped and he lost his place in not only Team India, but also the Mumbai side, and was eventually released by the Delhi Capitals (DC) following a poor 2024 season.
But now he’s back, fit and raring to go for DC (he was bought for Rs 75 lakhs). “Last year I didn’t play the IPL, but I enjoyed life… went to a couple of destinations and it helped freshen my mind. I came back and worked harder on my batting. That break was good for me,” Shaw told reporters after a training session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Wednesday.
Shaw admitted to making mistakes, but felt the Mumbai snub was unfair. “When I got dropped from Mumbai, I didn’t agree with the reason that was given to me, but accepted it with a smile. I didn’t speak to the [MCA] president or selectors or anyone. Many states came forward, but Maharashtra is close to Mumbai and I have friends there, so I went there,” said Shaw, insisting that he has turned over a new leaf. “Whatever has been written about me [in the media] is only half the reality. Only my family and friends know me. I’m human and bound to make mistakes, but now there is self-belief. I know where I have come and everything else is history. I’m now in a place where I’m most happy when I’m on the ground. Cricket is my passion and no one can take that away from me,” he concluded.
