India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill insists he has nothing to prove personally, as he leads Gujarat Titans in the upcoming IPL, on the back of a T20 World Cup snub.
“If you look at the past three or four seasons, I have the most runs in the IPL. So, I don’t think I have anything to prove this season,” Gill said during GT’s pre-season media interaction at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
“I am not someone who focuses too much on personal goals. In the last four years that I’ve played for this team, I think we have done decently well as a unit. And I think I have done decently well as a batsman. So, I don’t think I need to prove my worth to anyone,” said Gill when asked if he had a point to prove after the World Cup snub.
Speaking about GT’s upcoming season, he said: “As a team, we need to be consistent, which I think we have been. If we continue doing that, sooner or later, we’ll win the trophy again. Meanwhile, with many fans and experts talking about the possibility of a 300 total, GT coach Ashish Nehra said he hopes that doesn’t happen. “I hope not,” he said, admitting though that the fans come to watch batsmen in the shortest version of the game. “It has always been a batsman’s game. People want to see 240, 250, but if you ask me, that’s not good for the game. Even if you ask the captain, he [Gill] is an opener, keep captaincy aside. It’s not that easy, even on a flat surface. So, when people think that it’s evolving, I don’t think so. Same sticks, same ball and same pitch length,” Nehra concluded.
