Sarfaraz Khan notched up his maiden T20 century to propel Mumbai to a 98-run win over Assam in a Group A clash of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy held here on Tuesday.

Having been sent in to bat first, Sarfaraz ravaged Assam’s bowling attack en-route his 47-ball 100*. The 28-year-old’s knock included eight fours and seven sixes and he celebrated reaching the three-figure mark with a vicious roar.

Sarfaraz, who has featured in six Test matches for India, received support from the likes of Ajinkya Rahane (42 off 33 balls), Sairaj Patil (25 not out off 9 balls), Ayush Mhatra (21 off 15 balls), and India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav (20 off 12 balls). Mumbai racked up 220-4 (20 overs)

In reply, Assam were bundled out for 122 in 19.1 overs, with Mumbai skipper Shardul Thakur picking up a five-wicket haul (5-23). Meanwhile, in a Group C encounter, India all-rounder Hardik Pandya made an excellent return to competitive cricket after two months, striking an unbeaten 77 to power Baroda to a seven-wicket win over Punjab. Pandya’s 42-ball knock, which included seven four and four sixes, helped Baroda surmount Punjab’s  222-8 in 20 overs, which was built around India opener Abhishek Sharma’s 19-ball 50. Pandya’s blitz carried Baroda to 224 for three in 19.1 overs.

This was Pandya’s first competitive outing after facing Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup at Dubai on September 26.

Mumbai 220-4 in 20 overs (S Khan 100*, A Rahane 42; S Hussain 1-39) beat Assam 122 all out in 19.1 overs (S Roy 41; S Thakur 5-23, S Patil 2-12, A Ankolekar 2-17) by 98 runs
