Chennai Super Kings – 12 appearances
No team embodies consistency like Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In just 16 seasons of participation (excluding suspensions in 2016 and 2017), they’ve reached the playoffs 12 times and contested 10 finals. Five championship victories (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023) under MS Dhoni have cemented their status as IPL’s most formidable side. For CSK, anything less than silverware is seen as a shortfall, a testament to the high standards they’ve set
Mumbai Indians – 11 appearances
Initially slow to establish dominance, Mumbai Indians (MI) evolved into IPL juggernauts. With 11 playoff appearances, including seven under Rohit Sharma’s stewardship, MI are second only to CSK in this department. Their breakthrough came in 2010 with a runners-up finish, followed by consistent performances and title wins in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Despite leadership transitioning to Hardik Pandya in 2025, MI remain serious contenders for a sixth title.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 10 appearances
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have consistently reached the playoffs, ten times to be exact, but their trophy cabinet remains conspicuously bare. They’ve appeared in three finals, 2009, 2011, and 2016, only to fall short each time against Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, respectively. Adding to the heartbreak are six other playoff exits (2010, 2015, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2024), leaving fans with a decade-long wait for a maiden title. Despite their flair and star-studded line-ups, RCB have struggled to break their knockout curse
Kolkata Knight Riders – 8 appearances
Kolkata Knight Riders have reached the playoffs eight times and converted four of those into finals appearances, clinching the title three times. Their playoff journey began in 2011, and under Gautam Gambhir's inspiring leadership, KKR lifted the trophy in 2012 and again in 2014. Although they narrowly missed a top-four finish in 2015, they bounced back with consistent performances, finishing in the top half of the table from 2016 to 2018. A runners-up finish in 2021 demonstrated their resilience, and the 2024 title win under Shreyas Iyer confirmed their resurgence
Sunrisers Hyderabad – 7 appearances
Joining the league in 2013, Sunrisers Hyderabad have emerged as a model of consistency, qualifying for the playoffs seven times, more than several long-standing teams such as Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. SRH debuted strongly by finishing fourth in their maiden season under Kumar Sangakkara’s guidance. Their crowning moment came in 2016 when David Warner’s dynamic leadership propelled them to their first IPL title. From 2016 to 2020, the 'Orange Army' maintained a strong presence, making four consecutive playoff appearances and reinforcing their reputation as serious contenders
