The 47-year-old is said to have been arrested from his penthouse home in Sandbanks, Dorset in the afternoon.

"At 1.42pm officers attended a disturbance (and) a 47-year-old man was arrested for criminal damage. He was released on bail until October pending further enquiries," a Dorset Police spokesperson said.

One of english football's most talented players during his prime, Gascoigne or Gazza as he is referred to by fans and critics alike, has struggled with alcoholism since his retirement in 2004.
