Accra: Ghana football team captain Asamoah Gyan has denied reports circulating in the local media that he is a financier of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

A political talk show host, Mugabe Maase, alleged on Montie Fm, a local language radio station in Accra, on Wednesday that Gyan was financing the opposition political party to win this year's general election, reports Xinhua.

"Say no to irresponsible journalism, the owners/managers of Muntie fm must call Mugabe to order. I'm a footballer and not a politician," he tweeted. "I serve GH (Ghana) not politicians not parties, I don't fund politics, there's more joy in charity and philanthropy (and) my works are my evidence," said Gyan.

Meanwhile, the Minority Leader in Ghana's Parliament, Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, said claims that Gyan was a financier of the NPP were completely false.

"I don't know of any such contribution coming from Asamoah Gyan in 2008 and 2012 when I have been keenly involved," Mensah-Bonsu said.

Ghana will go to the polls on November 7 to elect a president and 275 members of Parliament.
