I don’t know if I am making a big deal about this, but my boyfriend is in touch with someone he used to have a crush on before we began dating. She didn’t like him as much, and he eventually met me, and we got along very well. We have been together for six months or so, and he told me about her when we began going out. I was okay with it because it didn’t affect me much at the time, until I found out that he still chats with her regularly. When I asked him about it, he laughed it off saying they were just friends, but I can’t shake the feeling that he still hopes something will happen between them. He doesn’t talk about it, but I know he will end this relationship with me if she tells him that she is willing to give him a chance. I have asked him about this directly, and he says that will never happen, but he has no reason to stay in touch with her. Am I being difficult for thinking this way?
You’re entitled to feeling the way you do, and the onus of reassuring you is on your boyfriend. There is nothing wrong with being friends with someone, but if you have reasons to feel insecure about this, given their history, he has to take your concerns seriously and evaluate what it is doing to your relationship. If you feel as if he will leave you for her, it is also a sign that your relationship with him is not as stable as you would like it to be, which should concern you both. Tell him why this is causing unnecessary conflict, ask for a better explanation, or accept that this is just a friendship between two adults that poses no threat to your relationship with him. Also, focus on building a stronger bond between him because you have chosen each other, and owe it to yourselves to try and make this work. It can.
