Change is never easy, and moving is going to be challenging, but remind yourself that this is a step, not a destination. You can always move again if this doesn’t work out well

I have been married for a little over a year and my husband wants us to move to another part of the country to be closer to his parents. I know he misses them a lot but, from the few interactions I have had with them, it makes me worried because they are not that interested in me or what I have to say. Maybe it’s unfair for me to assume that this is a bad idea, but I have been very happy so far and believe that staying far from family has been a major factor in why my husband and I have managed to grow so close together. I don’t want to jeopardise that by moving, but don’t know how to explain this to him because he is so worried about his parents. Am I a bad person for wanting this? Should I just go and then try my best to adjust?
You’re not a bad person for wanting what is good for your marriage, but neither is your husband for wanting to be close to his parents. The most sensible thing to do is tell him what your fears are and ask for a way out if this doesn’t turn out to be good for you both. Marriage is about navigating these issues and arriving at compromises that work for both partners, and this doesn’t have to be about his way or yours. It’s also possible that you and your in-laws may be able to forge a close bond simply because of a proximity that hasn’t been possible until now. Keep an open mind, be clear about your expectations, and tell your husband that your marriage is a priority and should be the only thing that helps you both decide what to do if this turns out to be a bad idea. Change is never easy, and moving is going to be challenging, but remind yourself that this is a step, not a destination. You can always move again if this doesn’t work out well.
