I am a 28-year old guy and have been engaged to a girl whose parents are acquaintances of my parents. We like each other a lot but have only met four or five times so far, and always for short periods. Her parents don’t like her chatting with me on WhatsApp too much, so we don’t even get a chance to communicate when we aren’t meeting. This is frustrating because I would like to know more about the person I am supposed to spend my life with. My parents don’t think it’s important because they are old-fashioned and won’t bring this up with the girl’s parents, and she won’t mention it either. How do I resolve this problem? Should I speak to her parents directly?
You should, because your concerns are valid and you are entitled to know her better. You are engaged and have the right to speak to her parents with any concerns you may have, irrespective of whether your parents share them. Some people believe marriage gives both partners a lifetime to get to know each other, and while there’s nothing wrong with that idea, it never hurts to communicate before settling down either. This is your life at stake, and a commitment you make with another person, so you should be at liberty to speak your mind about anything that bothers you, especially because your request isn’t an irrational one.
Should I tell my brother that his girlfriend is only using him? He doesn’t see it this way, but I know who she is, and she is definitely not a good person.
You can tell him your fears and put forth your reasons, but you should also be prepared for the possibility of him rejecting them and sticking to what he wants to do. We may disagree with choices made by our loved ones, but also remember that we all have lessons we must learn for ourselves.
