Talk about your friends and how they feel and give your partner an opportunity to address that. Lastly, try being more patient

This isn’t really a problem, but I have been dating a guy who is around five years younger, and my friends think it’s a bad idea. They laugh about it a lot and although I know they mean well, I find myself questioning this relationship only because of what they say. My boyfriend and I have been together for almost a year now and we are very compatible. He knows I worry about my friends and their opinion, and stays away from get-togethers if they are around, which is sad. I have asked my friends to be more supportive, and they try, but the way they look at this relationship makes me wonder if I should be with someone my own age. I am approaching 40, which may be why they don’t think this will lead to anything serious. Am I being paranoid about this, or should I end it before I get hurt?
There will always be opinions by a lot of people on whom you should or shouldn’t be in a relationship with. Your friends may mean well and may be right to worry about whether you have a future with this person. The fact remains, however, that you and your boyfriend alone are in a position to comment on where things stand and what this may evolve into. All relationships come with the potential of ending because human beings are fickle and can change their minds. To assume this will happen simply because your partner is five years younger isn’t reason enough. Age may matter to some people but is not a determining factor in what makes a relationship work. If you and your partner love each other, like spending time together, and communicate, you’re in a good place. Relationships also evolve when you are able to talk about what doesn’t work. Talk about your friends and how they feel and give your partner an opportunity to address that. Lastly, try being more patient.
