I suggest you also speak about why it has taken you so long to sort this out, and hope that he is mature enough and professional enough to do what needs to be done and get things back to normal

My boss has been making passes at me, and I don’t know what to do. He has always been respectful and kind, but things changed when we went on an offsite a few months ago. He and I chatted there, and I may have been a little flirtatious because I drank alcohol. I don’t know if I inadvertently gave him the wrong idea, and it has been a problem since then because he now looks at me as if I am interested in him. I want to set things straight by being honest with him, but I am worried that this may backfire because he may accuse me of leading him on. If this upsets him, he may make sure I don’t progress in my career. I have been at this firm for over five years, and believe I have a future here. How do I sort this out without making things worse for me at the office? I am losing sleep over this because I can’t think of a solution.
The longer you take to try and make your position clearer, the harder it will be for you as well as your boss to return to the way things were. If you are uncomfortable about his words or actions, you owe it to yourself to be honest with him even if you are worried about how he may take it. If this is a misunderstanding, he needs to know why he may have got the wrong message. There are also laws in place that protect you from harassment if things get out of hand. As for your fears about how this may affect your career, it’s impossible to predict how that may play out unless you are honest with your boss and tell him how you feel. I suggest you also speak about why it has taken you so long to sort this out, and hope that he is mature enough and professional enough to do what needs to be done and get things back to normal.
