To give up is not an option, and your relationship with your mother will continue to evolve for the rest of your lives. It is only by keeping lines of communication open that you may be able to get through to her, eventually allowing her to see things from your point of view

My mother and I recently had a conversation about my boyfriend, and she said she wanted me to break up with him. When I asked her why she felt that way, she said it was because she didn’t like his beliefs. This surprised me because my parents have never been bigoted in any way, and I was taken aback by her reason. I refused, naturally, but this has caused some tension between us, and I noticed that she is no longer as polite to my boyfriend as she is to my other friends. I have asked him to stop coming over because of it. I have been very sad about what has happened because it has changed the way I look at my mother. I don’t want to listen to her but am also afraid this will damage my relationship with her forever. What should I do?
One of the biggest mistakes we tend to make is equating our parents with infallible demigods, forgetting that they are as human as us, and prone to the same prejudices and issues that we are. It’s why we should be able to call them out on it if they go against something we strongly believe in. If you disagree with your mother, you should be allowed to do so because you are an adult with views and opinions of your own. Your relationship is private, and the only other person allowed to comment on it is the other person in it. I suggest you tell your mother why you intend to ignore her suggestion and explain why you feel the way you do. We are living in a time when hate is tearing families apart the world over. To give up is not an option, and your relationship with your mother will continue to evolve for the rest of your lives. It is only by keeping lines of communication open that you may be able to get through to her, eventually allowing her to see things from your point of view.
