Omar Ahmad Ganie, a resident of Padgampora village in Awantipora area of the district, attempted to rape a 13-year-old girl in his neighbourhood, a police spokesman said. "Before police reached the spot, the locals thrashed him.
He was shifted to local hospital where from he has been referred to Srinagar," the spokesman said. Police sources, however, said the boy and the girl were having an affair and had visited the girl's home when she was alone.
The relatives of the girl thrashed Ganie after they found him there and filed a complaint of attempt to rape against him, the sources said.
The girl tried to commit suicide, they said adding she was admitted to SMHS hospital here. Ganie is younger brother of a wanted militant, who was allegedly involved in the deadly attack on army convoy at Hydepora here on June 24 that left eight soldiers dead and 16 others injured.
