Witnesses say that the incident on Azam campus was triggered by a group of students, which the victim wasn't a part of, passing lewd comments at some girls
Two days after Afghan student Mohammad Shamim Rahimi was brutally assaulted by three youths at the Azam campus in Camp, it has been discovered that the attack was prompted by four Afghan students singing Hindi and Afghani songs and passing lewd comments at girls passing by.
Mistaken identity
On Friday, three youths from the area tried to stop the Afghani student, but were beaten up by the latter. The trio - Abed Kureshi (19), Mohsin Shaikh (23) and Mohsin Yusuf (21) — fled the spot, but returned to Azam campus with over 20 boys, seeking revenge.

By that time, the four Afghan students had disappeared. The trio saw Rahimi and his brother come out of the campus and hail an auto. They mistook Rahimi for one of the four who had attacked them and ended up brutally assaulting the innocent Afghan student.
“One Daud Kureshi, who had a sharp weapon, allegedly stabbed Rahimi in multiple places, seriously injuring him,” said inspector Sushma Chavan of Cantonment police station. “Rahimi, who was not even part of the group of four unidentified Afghan students, became a victim of mistaken identity,” she added.

Rahimi and his brother Mohammad Azizi were studying MBA at Azam campus. The victim is undergoing treatment at Jehangir hospital in Sangamvadi, and his condition is said to be critical.
Police probe
Inspector Nitin Jadhav said that the arrested trio has filed a non-cognisable offence against the four unidentified Afghan students and police are trying to trace them. Also, cops will investigate the ‘passing of comments’ issue by the quartet outside the mosque on the premises of Azam campus, said Chavan.u00a0
We don’t feel safe in city after the attack: Rahimi’s brother
“He was not related to the initial incident. Still, these people mistook him and attacked him with sharp weapons,” said Mohammad Azizi, the brother of the victim.u00a0He said that Rahimi was stabbed on the neck, back and hands with more than five sharp weapons.
“After the attack, the assaulters ran away but nobody from the college came forward to help us. My cousin Sarhadi Mohidi and I rushed my brother to the hospital,” said Azizi.u00a0He said that the local authorities did not even contact their Embassy in Delhi on Friday.“
We were contacted by our Embassy on Sunday. After this incident, which took place in broad daylight, the Afghan community is living in fear and is demanding full security,” he said.
Speaking about medical expenses, Azizi said that the bill has gone up to Rs 1.50 lakh in two days. Till now, they have been managing through contributions from their community, but he says there’s no word on how long his brother will have to stay in hospital.u00a0
