For some time now, experts around the world have hailed Rohit Sharma as one of cricket's most gifted batsmen. His ability to play the ball late has left everyone in awe of his talent.

Best Diwali gift for us, says Rohit Sharma's father

His father Gurunath feels Rohit is finally living up to his potential after the Mumbai batsman, who made his international debut in 2007, scaled a new high in his one-day career, smashing a mind-boggling 158-ball 209 against Australia in the series decider at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Saturday.

“He is finally playing to his potential. And all credit goes to skipper MS Dhoni and the team management who promoted him to the opening slot. Since then, he has been playing very well. He played an unbelievable knock,” Gurunath told SUNDAY MiD DAY from his Borivli residence.

The 26-year-old became the third batsman in history to score a double ton in a 50-over match, joining his illustrious teammates Sachin Tendulkar (200 not out) and Virender Sehwag (219).“I don’t think he had specifically targetted to score a double hundred in ODIs. His aim has always been to play a good knock which will help the team win,” added Gurunath.

Rohit’s 16 sixes broke Shane Watson’s record of 15 in an innings and the Sharmas residence was naturally jubilant. “This is the best Diwali gift for us. I have never seen him play so well. We will burst a few crackers tonight, but will have a proper celebration once he returns home,” signed off Rohit’s proud father.u00a0
