Security was beefed up at all entry points to the Pune international airport after a police inspector from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) informed the police control room that there was a bomb threat at the airport, police insiders told MiD DAY.

According to police sources, the control room received a call from the airport security officials around 11 pm last night.

"The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was called in after the threat was announced," said the sources. "The entire airport was combed by BDDS officials from 11.15 pm to midnight, but nothing was found."

When MiD DAY visited the airport, it found that security had been beefed up as vehicles had to pass through at least two checkpoints to reach the international airport.

Sophisticated armoury and weaponry were also being used. "From carbines to short and long rifles, we have arranged for tight security," said Inspector Vishwanath Ghanwat (crime) of Yerawada police station who was one of the senior officers on nakabandi duty.

Asked if there was a bomb scare, Ghanwat did not confirm.

"There is no such bomb threat," Ghanwat told MiD DAY.

"Whenever we are asked to do nakabandi, we are ready within a few minutes. It's part of our job."
