While most people will be celebrating Gatari Amavasya, the cops attached to the Cuffe Parade and Colaba police station will be on their toes. According to sources, authorities fear there is a murderer on the loose, who believes in astrology. The reason: The murder of three girls in the area occurred more or less around Amavasya.u00a0

Jagruti Patel was found dead on November 13 last year, while Karishma Chavan and Angel Sharma’s bodies were found on January 18 and April 19, 2012 respectively. While Karishma and Jagruti were found dead at the same spot near the Nariman Point Fire Brigade depot, Angel’s body was recovered from the sea, near Maker Tower, Cuffe Parade.

“Amavasya fell on November 24, 2011, January 22 and April 19 and 20, just a few days after all the murders. Once again, Gatari Amavasya is today and there is high risk. We have deployed 120 police constables in various locations at Colaba and Cuffe Parade on Wednesday and Thursday. We have also installed around 60 CCTV cameras to prevent any untoward incident,” said an official from the Cuffe Parade police station.

So far, the police have collected DNA samples of 895 people, out of which reports of 200 people have come up negative. Officials said the first victim’s body was too decomposed to recover a sample, but DNA samples recovered from the other two victims don’t match any suspects so far. Special squads have been formed to investigate the murders, but have not made any breakthrough. “Ritual sacrifice on Amasvya is considered a good omen by various groups and we suspect that such a group might be behind the murders and don’t want to miss out on any angle,” said an official adding that similar murders had taken place in Nehru Nagar in 2010, of which the cops solved one. “We have asked the Nehru nagar police for help,” said a police officer from Colaba police station.u00a0
