FICA chief May sour over BCCI boycott

Board of Control for Cricket in India officials will miss the ICC Awards, a senior BCCI official confirmed on Saturday.

Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag have been nominated in the Cricketer of the Year category with the gala ceremony scheduled for October 6 at Bengaluru.

"Most of us won't be attending the awards," the official said. The reason for the Board's boycott is because of the involvement of Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA). "We don't recognise FICA, and never want to be on the same stage as them," he said.

"We were not even consulted about the dates of the awards," the furious official said. Meanwhile, FICA chief Tim May said he wasn't surprised at BCCI's decision.

"They (BCCI) have had a prejudice against player unions for a very long time, and that trend has just continued. We're not amused," he told SUNDAY MiD DAY.

"By not attending the awards, they are indirectly not supporting the achievements of their star players. However, we are very pleased that at least the players will attend," he said.

"The ICC Awards is the only night of the year that recognises the achievements of a cricketer, so none of us want it to be marred with controversy," May concluded.

Asked if the miss would be an indirect snub to former BCCI President and current ICC president Sharad Pawar, the official said, "why would we ever go against him? Our status in world cricket is huge. Since the event is taking place in Bengaluru, we should have been at least consulted before hand."
