The accused, identified as Arvind Gupta aka Guddu, is a resident of Goregaon (East) and works as a mobile technician. On Tuesday afternoon, Guddu stabbed Shagufta Khan in her apartment at Rustomjee Tower at Marve Road. The woman breathed her last in front of her two daughters (‘Daughters, 5 and 11, see mom bleed to death after being stabbed by friend’, November 12, mid-day).
Police sources said Guddu, who has already sent his girlfriend home across the border, is now trying to escape there himself.
A Crime Branch officer said, “Guddu has been having an affair with a prostitute from Grant Road, Sana Khan (name changed). He would visit her place daily, but 15 days ago, he took her to Bangladesh and gave her his mobile phone, telling her he would be back in a couple of weeks so they could live together in Bangladesh.”
Guddu gave some money to an agent at the border to help Sana cross over to the other side with some clothes and household items. He also gave her money to sustain herself for a few days.
Meanwhile, investigations revealed that Shagufta’s husband, businessman Sonu Jhalam, had broken off the relationship a year-and-half ago and gone to live in Australia. Cops said that before her death, Shagufta was involved in three affairs, and her companions – one of them from Kolkata — have been taken into custody.
Incidentally, cops revealed, the Goregaon mobile shop Guddu worked at is owned by Siraj Khan, who was having an affair with Shagufta for the last one year. Siraj regularly sent Guddu to Shagufta’s place to deliver mobile handsets to her, and the two became friends.
Officials said that Guddu is trying to escape to Bangladesh, and if he crosses the border, nobody can touch him. The Crime Branch has laid traps in the border areas to nab him.
The accused has been captured on the CCTV cameras keeping watch on the building premises. The footage establishes that Guddu entered the building at 3.05 pm on Tuesday and, 10 minutes later, ran away with the cash and valuables robbed from Shagufta Khan.
He came in an auto rickshaw and told the driver to wait outside Rustomjee Tower for about 20 minutes. The police have detained the rickshaw driver, Faiyaaz from Malad, after tracing his vehicle’s number, which was captured by the camera installed outside the building.
