West Indies skipper Chris Gayle's decision to order his spinner Sulieman Benn off the ground created headlines during the fourth one-dayer against South Africa in Dominicia on Sunday.

But, it was not the first time a West Indian skipper had ordered his player off the field during a match. Vivian Richards had done the same to his opening batsman Richard Gabriel during the second final of the 1983-84 World Series Cup against hosts Australia.

Left-arm spinner Benn upset Gayle for refusing to bowl over the wicket while Richardsu00a0ticked off Gabriel for sloppy work in the field. in February, 1984 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Gabriel had a poor day in the field and Richards, deputising for the injured Clive Lloyd, couldn't take it anymore when Gabriel failed to stop a Wessels cut shot at deep point and the ball sailed to the boundary. Wessels top-scored with 77. Describing the incident on Channel Nine, commentator Frank Tyson said: "I bet Richards is absolutely furious. Richards has got his hands on his hips. He is glaring towards square point area and now he is taking disciplinary action."

Richards ordered Gabriel off the field and in came Gus Logie. Opposition captain Kim Hughes was not impressed and conveyed his displeasure to Richards. Logie was not part of the playing eleven having got himself injured in an earlier game. The match was one-day international's first tie after West Indies had scored 222, batting first
Australia collapsed through some fine West Indies pace bowling and the Caribbeans won the third final and with it the trophy.
