Girl jumps off train, lover follows, dies

Love turned fatal for a 25-year-old man, who lost his life in an attempt to save his girlfriend who jumped off a moving train on Saturday.

Tragic love: 17-year-old girl jumped off a moving Virar-bound train after a fight with her family over her relationship with 25-year-old Panchal, who lost his life while trying to save her

The 17-year-old Malad-based girl (name withheld), who was in a relationship with him, jumped off a Virar-bound train after a bitter fight with her family members over her relationship.

While the girl is currently recuperating at a city hospital, her boyfriend Jayesh Panchal succumbed to his injuries. The incident took place between Vasai and Nalasopara. The Vasai GRP registered a case of accidental death.

According to police officials, the couple was in a relationship for a few years and wanted to get married. Both were neighbours in Malad’s Kurar area. The girl was studying in Std X, while Panchal was assisting his father in their family business. Problems cropped up when the couple’s family members refused to accept their relationship and asked them to part ways.

Lover’s tale
After their families refused to acknowledge their relationship, the two eloped and married at a temple in Nalasopara.

The happy couple even rented a flat in Nalasopara and started living together. The families did not register a case as they were neighbours and wanted to amicably resolve the issue. When their families got to know about their whereabouts, they reached the couple’s house on Saturday to talk things out.

Several hours of heated argument amongst both the families ensued in a solution that they will get the two married at the right age. The families decided to take them back to Malad to their respective homes.

The couple and their families boarded a Churchgate-bound fast local from Nalasopara, however, the families started squabbling again. The infuriated couple got off the train to go back to their rented home in Virar. The families followed them in order to convince the couple again and boarded the same train.

The girl was standing near the door with her father, while Jayesh was sitting inside the compartment with his parents. As soon as the train moved out of Vasai station, the frustrated girl jumped out. Immediately Jayesh followed her but by that time the train had picked up considerable speed. Fellow commuters pulled the chain to stop the train.

Both of them were taken to Ravi hospital where Jayesh was declared dead on arrival and the girl, who suffered serious injuries, is recuperating. Tragically she hasn’t been told about her lover’s death yet. Her 44-year-old inconsolable father said, “We agreed to her marriage later but she took the extreme step of ending her life but thankfully survived. She still doesn’t know that Jayesh is dead. We had to tell her that he is recovering at another hospital in Vasai. We have lost everything now.”

Police inspector P S Bhangare of Vasai GRP said, “The girl jumped and the boy followed. We have registered accidental death case for Jayesh. We have taken down statements and there is no complaint from both the families.”u00a0
