Kanimozhi puts up a brave face in court as lawyers appeal for bail, and her mother breaks down. Kanimozhi spent her first night in Tihar jail on Friday and Karunanidhi plans to head to Delhi on Monday to consult legal experts

DMK MP Kanimozhi looked composed but pale when she appeared before a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Delhi on Saturday.u00a0The 43-year-old daughter of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was brought to the Patiala House court complex at around 10 am in a police van with the other accused. As soon as Kanimozhi stepped into the courtroom, her mother Rajathi Ammal broke down.

However, the Rajya Sabha MP controlled her emotions and consoled her mother by holding her hands. According to DMK chief Karunandhi, sending Kanimozhi to jail is a violation of law. There's a conspiracy against the DMK from Kanyakumari to the Himalayas, he told journalists.

Karunandhi plans to head to Delhi on Monday with senior DMK leaders to consult legal experts. Kanimozhi spent the previous night in a 10 ft by 15 ft cell in the women's ward of Jail NO. 6's Ward 8 at Tihar. Throughout the scrutiny of documents, she was seen talking to her husband G Aravinthan, eight-year-old son, who sat on her lap and other family members.u00a0

Kanimozhi was arrested for her role in the second generation (2G) spectrum allocation scam. She was sent to Tihar on May 20. The court was expected to deliver its order on the bail pleas of Asif Balwa and Rajeev Aggarwal, both directors of Kusegaon Realty. They have been charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption in the 2G scam case. The order has now been deferred till May 24. While Kanimozhi was lodged in Jail No. 6, Kumar was sent to Jail No. 4, which also has Commonwealth Games scam accused Suresh Kalmadi.

The CBI had claimed that Kanimozhi lobbied for A Raja to become a Union Cabinet minister. Kanimozhi has been charged under Sections 7 and 11 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
