Hollywood singer-actress Lindsay Lohan's house has been ransacked by burglars.

The "Mean Girls" star returned to her home in Los Angeles' Hollywood Hills Sunday morning to find it ransacked, reports people.com.

"The safe was ripped out of the wall and the door was off the hinges and door handles removed. Bags, shoes and jewellery were taken too... Thank God she wasn't home. She's Ok, but upset," said the 23-year-old star's mother Dina.

Staff are now packing up Lohan's remaining belongings so she and her sister Ali can move to a more secure location.

Dina confirmed: "We are moving her to a safer place. Ali and Lindsay just left me in New York, and left people in charge to pack."

Lohan's father Michael is convinced the burglary was an "inside job" and has hired a private investigator to look into the case.

He said: "I'm sick of people bugging my daughter and using her. This is not the first time she's been robbed. I'm working with the police but at the same time, I have my own people.

"I've hired private investigators and I'm going to work my own investigation and find out who did this. Lindsay is not Ok. She's very upset and feels extremely violated... I'm just happy Ali and Lindsay weren't home at the time. But I feel that they were kept out of the house for a reason. This was definitely an inside job," he added.

The Los Angeles police are investigating the robbery.

A spokesman said: "All we can confirm is that we are investigating a possible break in at the residence and we still have officers on the scene. We got a call shortly before 7 a.m. on Sunday and it's still under investigation. No arrests have been made."

It's not the first time thieves have targeted Lohan's home.

In May, suspects were caught on surveillance cameras entering the house, but fled after the alarm went off.
