20-year-old midfielder Harry Kane brought Tottenham back into the contest after Hull were leading 2-1 in extra time, thanks to a own goal by Spurs’ second-choice goalkeeper Brad Friedel and Paul McShane’s headed goal.
In the shootout, Aaron McLean missed for Hull before Spurs’ record signing Erik Lamela fluffed his lines for the hosts, but Friedel had the final say, saving with his legs from Ahmed Elmohamady to secure a nail-biting win.
Spurs’ reward was a home tie with West Ham United, while Manchester City will travel to second-tier Leicester City.u00a0
