ST Catherine of Siena (Bandra) lost the MSSA inter-school girls' under-12 football title by a whisker. However, the children from the orphanage did not go down without putting up a brave fight.

The debutants lost to another newcomer, J B Petit High School (Fort) 0-2 in the tie-breaker after a goalless full-time at Azad Maidan yesterday. Reha Patel and Alaia Singh scored for J B Petit in the shoot-out.

Striker disappointed

Lalita Bist, who has been the most impressive striker for St Catherine throughout the tournament, was obviously disappointed.

"We should have won the match. But we are proud to be the runners-up in this, our very first appearance in the tournament," she said.

St Catherine's sports in-charge Patsy Furtado was happy with the girls' achievement.

"Nobody expected us to come this far in the tournament. My girls have shown that they are at par with other schools. The players were confident but I think they got a bit nervous towards the end and gave it away," said Furtado.

Furtado had special praise for 'Come celebrate Bandra' an advanced locality management group formed by Bandra residents, who helped provide the kids with their playing kits and a mini bus for matches.

"Without their support it would have been difficult for us to organise this. We are grateful for all their help," added Furtado.

Super 'keeper

Meanwhile, J B Petit's goalkeeper Anaya Jhaveri held her nerves till the end to emerge victorious.

"Actually I was very nervous in the shoot-out, but I did not let it show. Seeing me confident their strikers made mistakes," said Jhaveri, who did not concede a single goal in the tournament.
