The Indian Railway plans to float tenders for the installation of new Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) at various Central Railway (CR) stations. There are 175 ATVMs at various CR stations presently.

"The idea is to ensure the railways do not make huge investments to set up much needed ATVMs. The private party invests in the machines, and recovers the costs either from a commission from the earnings or as a fixed amount from the railways. However, the modalities of the project are yet to be worked out. We have just received a directive from the railway board to explore this option," said a railway official.

Srinivas Mudgerikar, chief public relations officer, CR, said, "We still have to work out the technicalities of this joint venture, after which we plan to invite tenders from private parties."

ATVMs in numbers
Number of existing ATVMs: 175 on CR and 125 on WR
How does it work: The machine has a touch screen, which works on a smart card and delivers printed tickets
Cost of one ATVM: Rs 1.75 lakh
The Centre for Railway Information and Systems has developed the ATVM
