The cops, stationed at Worli and Oshiwara respectively, have suffered injuries but are out of danger; both bikers were stopped for not wearing helmets

The attacks on the city’s police personnel refuse to stop. Two cops from Worli and Oshiwara are the latest victims, after being knocked down by two bikers who were riding without helmets at nakabandis.

Elderly cop mowed down
In Oshiwara at 5.30 pm yesterday, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Krishna Mandavkar (56) was at a nakabandi at Anand Nagar in Andheri West, when he saw a biker, Sadik Shaikh, trying to cross the nakabandi without a helmet. When Mandavkar tried to stop Shaikh for the violation, he knocked down the cop and tried to flee from the spot. However, in the process, he fell from the bike and was arrested.
Later, the cop’s colleagues took him to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted but later discharged, police said. ASIâÂu00c2u0080Âu00c2u0088Mandavkar suffered injuries on his back and right hand.
According to Oshiwara Police sources, Shaikh is a resident of Laxmi Nagar and works in a private firm. “The ASI is going to retire in three months. We are registering an FIR against Shaikh. His bike has been seized and we are trying to collect more information,” said Inspector Arjun Rajane.
Teen crashes, parents booked
Meanwhile, in Worli, a teenager riding without a licence, crashed into a policeman leaving the cop, Deepak Nikhalje (40), with injuries on his hands, legs and back.
Nikhalje was rushed to the nearby Podar Hospital and was discharged later in the day.
The incident occurred at around 11.30 am, when Nikhalje, of Worli police station, was observing a routine nakabandi at Worli Naka with other cops on a mobile patrolling van. The 16-year-old, who was riding a scooter, was spotted by the cops and signalled to halt since he was not wearing a helmet. However, instead of stopping, he attempted to flee and reached the barricade where Nikhalje was posted, crashing into him. The boy, a resident of Jijamata Nagar in Worli, sustained minor injuries on his face in the accident as well.
The police immediately took him into custody and found that he did not have a licence. He was booked under Sections 333 (voluntarily causes grievous hurt to any person being a public servant in the discharge of his duty), 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, and was sent to the Dongri remand home.
Senior police inspector of Worli police station, Vinay Kulkarni said, “His parents have also been booked under the provisions of Motor Vehicles Act since the bike was registered in his mother’s name. Further action will follow.”
