Even as local activists allege that the first complaint about the internal road was filed in July 2015, Aarey CEO’s office blames illegally plying private buses for damaging the road

Even as local activists and residents of Aarey Milk Colony continued to voice their woes over the pothole-ridden uneven road within the colony, the Aarey CEO office told mid-day that monsoon had delayed the repair work and that it would be taken up soon now.

Around Rs 1 crore will be spent on repairing the internal road from Aarey Market to Mayur Nagar near Royal Palms.
Year-long fight
Social activist from the area Nilesh Dhiri said, “I have been following up on the matter with the authorities for over a year now, but nothing much has happened, commuters continue to bear the brunt.”
In July 2015, the activist had complained about the bad condition of the road; work was started immediately, but, locals alleged, it was done patchily and didn’t last.

According to the CEO office, the road is in a bad condition as the area is low-lying and also because heavy vehicles and illegal tour operator buses, which ferry people from Mayur Nagar to Goregaon station, ply on it.
Blame the buses
Private bus owners who illegally ply their heavy vehicles on this stretch, causing unnecessary traffic, are the ones to be blamed for the road being in a bad state, Aarey CEO office reiterated.

Officials also said that it would be wrong to say the work was deliberately delayed, adding that the rains made it difficult to start the repairs.
“The Aarey Market-Mayur Nagar road is an internal one, constructed long back for normal mid-sized cars and tempos. If heavy vehicles run on it, even if it’s completely repaired, it will get damaged,” said an official from the CEO office.
