Crime Branch Unit IX has begun investigating the death of an accused, who allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself inside the toilet at a Bandra lock-up on Friday. Police said primary medical examination indicates he was assaulted by Vakola police during interrogation, and had external injury marks, indicating he was tortured.

Crime Branch sources said Chandrashekhar Yadav, a waiter who routinely stole credit and debit cards of customers, and looted them of large sums later, was depressed after he was taken from Gamdevi police station to the Vakola police station. A fellow accused revealed that he told him that Vakola police was assaulting him.

“He could not bear the torture and couldn’t stand properly because of the beating. His family members tried to meet him but officials asked them to go away,” a senior official told mid-day.

Crime Branch is awaiting the post-mortem report, which is likely to come on Monday from Cooper Hospital. “We will lodge an FIR against Vakola police for abetment of suicide,” a Crime Branch source added.

Police said Yadav was arrested in a debit card theft case by the MHB police, and then he was handed over to the Gamdevi police. He was later handed over to Vakola police in a debit and credit card fraud after an FIR under was registered against him.

“We had taken his custody on October 19. There were similar cases against him in many police stations including Vakola and Gamdevi. He had been lodged at the Bandra police station’s common lock-up,” said a police officer from Vakola police station.
