Two workshops conducted over two weekends in town will teach you the basics of print and dying

If you thought printing wasn't for everyone, two teachers from the city-based Srishti School of Design are out to prove you wrong.

They are inviting anybody who is above 16 years of age to be introduced to different techniques of printing on fabric through a basic workshop.

Four workshops, two each on the techniques of mono- print andu00a0 Shibori will be conducted over two weeks starting today.

Mono-print is the art of creating a single impression made from reprintable block on metal plates, litho stone or wood block while Shibori is the Japanese method of resist printing where clothes are dyed in various patterns.

Meera Curam and Swati Unakar, both teachers in the Textile Department, having been in the education field for over ten years and wanted to take to non-designers, who are interested in working with their hands, a new creative experience.

"As educators, we do not do much handwork on our own beyond the field," says Unakar, an NID graduate in textile design, who will be facilitating the workshop on Shibori.

"Shibori is a huge branch and includes many other methods within it. We will be focusing on three, stitch resist, clamp and folding," Unakar tells us.

The day-long workshops with a one hour break for lunch will limit the number of students per batch to a maximum of 12. "We intend to keep the numbers small as both these techniques require a lot of instructions from us," says Unakar.

While fabric will be the medium for printing at these workshops, the techniques once picked up can be transferred on to other media.

"The designs can be transferred onto paper and other media.

The workshop will also include the basics of identifying textures," says Curram who is also an artist with a graduation in visual arts from Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath.

Conducting workshops for those outside the field for the first time in Unakar's personal studio, the duo intends to decide their course of action based on the response they receive through these.

"Depending on the response, we might even conduct more advanced workshops for those who have attended the introductory ones soon," says Unakar.
