The Baramati Taluka police have arrested Ganesh Mansingh Shinde (42), a human rights activist and freelance journalist from Baramati, for allegedly raping a 23-year-old girl and making a video clip of them in a compromising position.

Sources said that the suspect is a member of the consumer cell of a leading political party in Baramati.
The survivor, a second year student of Computer Science, lodged a complaint against Shinde, accusing him of raping her on the pretext of marriage, and forcing her to undergo an abortion.
Shinde, who is married and has two children, has been charged under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and additional sections of the Information Technology Act will be added once the video clip is recovered, said police.
According to the police, the survivor, in her complaint, has stated that Shinde used to sexually assault her at a lodge near K K Market in Pune and his flat in Suryanagari. The survivor said she was also forced to undergo an abortion after she told Shinde that she was pregnant.
Police Inspector Chandrakant Kamble, in-charge of Baramati taluka police station, said, “Shinde and the complainant became acquainted through a common friend four years ago. Shinde then started calling up the girl and frequently sent her text messages on her mobile.
He had not disclosed his marital status to the girl and had lured her into a relationship on the pretext of marriage.”
“When Shinde’s wife got to know about the affair, she approached the complainant and asked her to avoid meeting him. When the girl starting avoiding Shinde, he threatened her that he would show a video clip of them in a compromising position to her parents and also make it public,” Kamble said.
“We have seized his mobile phone, but no video clip was found in it. Shinde has confessed that he had recorded the video of them through a digital camera, but is claiming that he had deleted it earlier. Once we recover the clip from the electronic device, we will add the relevant sections of the Information Technology Act,” Inspector Kamble said.
“Shinde works as the taluka president of a human rights organisation and also claims to be a freelance journalist. He also conducts counselling sessions for children and their parents. According to our information, he is not directly working for any political party but his family members are active members of the party in the area.”
