They played against each other in Ranji Trophy cricket in the late 1980s. Later, they played in the same CCI and SunGrace Mafatlal teams before being part of the 1996 Indian cricket team to England where Sandeep Patil was coach and Salil Ankola, a part of the pace attack.

Patil and Ankola join other examples of relatives in cricket like brothers-in-law Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Vishwanath; English cricketers Alec Stewart and Mark Butcher; Aussie Darren Lehmann and England's Craig White.
