The police have detained a 16-year-old boy who used to finish writing his exam before fellow students, and then steal their mobiles that had been kept in bags outside the classroom.
The accused studies at Fergusson College and was arrested on Sunday. The juvenile resides at a hostel in the city and hails from Ahmednagar district.
The Deccan Gymkhana police station had received several complaints of mobile thefts from the college students. “We received six complaints out of which five were from girl students.
The complainants in their statements stated that someone stole their mobile phones from their bags when they were busy writing their examination papers inside the classroom,” said Manohar Joshi, police inspector at Deccan Gymkhana police station.
He said that the incidents of theft took place between January 9 and 11 between 3 pm and 4.30 pm when the examination was ongoing inside the classroom.

He said that before entering the examination hall, the students were instructed to keep their bags and mobile phones outside the classroom.
Police then launched an investigation and subsequently arrested the suspect. “During investigations, it came to light that the 16-year-old student had stolen the mobile phones, and we detained him. During interrogations, he told us that he used to finish writing his exam paper before the others, and then step outside, ” said Joshi. He used to then open the bags of other students and steal the mobile phones.
“We have recovered six mobile phones from him, which are collectively valued at Rs 60,000, and have returned them to the complainants,” said Joshi. According to the police, the accused is excellent in studies, and had secured 92 per cent at the SSC examinations. “We have produced him in the juvenile court, and are further investigating the matter,” said Joshi.u00a0
