Pakistan's former captain Javed Miandad has advised senior players to take a break from the game to come out of bad patches in international cricket.

Miandad, the Pakistan Cricket Board's Director (Cricket) and the batting consultant of the national and junior teams, told reporters in Lahore that he believed that if a senior player was struggling for form the best way to overcome was to take a break.

"I think the best way to come out off a bad patch is to take a break for a while and go back to the basics. This happened to me when I was playing and I have seen it happening to many other great players. But a break is essential to prolong your career," he said.

Miandad didn't take names but was apparently pointing out to senior players like Misbah-ul-Haq, Salman Butt, Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal who flopped at crucial times in the recent Test and one-day series in Sri Lanka which were both lost.

Miandad, who was rated as Pakistan's top batsman in his 124-Test career that spanned nearly 20 years and six World Cups, said there was no doubt that Pakistan's batsmen had failed to respond to the challenge and succumbed to pressure on the recent tour of Sri Lanka.

Miandad said a place in the national team was a big honour for any player and anyone who was performing well and was willing to work hard deserved a shot at it.

"I am a firm believer in performances on the field. I don't believe in what happened yesterday or in the past. If a player is struggling for form he should take a break play domestic cricket regain his form and then make a comeback," he said.

Miandad, who is expected to accompany the Pakistan team for the Champions Trophy, said he was always willing to serve national team in any capacity and use his experience to benefit younger players.

"I have no issues doing any job and I am really looking forward to working with the under-19 and under-16 players who are the future of Pakistan cricket," he said.

Miandad also made it clear that place was open for any player in the national team and if fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was fit and performing well there was no reason he couldn't play for the country again.
