Hina Khan interview: My parents thought I was depressed

She has often been labelled arrogant, demanding and stubborn, but Hina Khan knows better than to let any of it affect her. After playing the traditional bahu in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai for eight years, Khan decided to mix things up -- so out went the docility and in came daredevilry.

She's back from a two-month-long shoot of Khatron Ke Khiladi [KKK] Season 8 where she gained new friends and lost most of her fears.

Edited excerpts from the interview:

What made you switch from fiction to reality TV?
Doing Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai had become monotonous for me. That's why I decided to quit the show. I wanted a drastic shift in my career and KKK proved dramatically different.

Everyone believes Geeta Phogat is the strongest female contender on the show. Do you agree?
Before leaving [for the shoot], I was convinced she is the strongest contestant. But this season, the girls have surpassed themselves. They've all done such a fabulous job. Even I surprised myself.

You've lost a lot of weight post your exit from Yeh Rishta... Was it for KKK?
The show was offered to me in April. Ten days after I quit Yeh Rishta..., I hit the gym since I wanted to be fit. I am not someone who works out at the gym, but it felt great. My body has been in much
better shape since then.

Between the two shows, what have you been occupied with?
The daily soap didn't allow me time to pamper myself. After I quit Yeh Rishta... I went on a holiday to London and Spain. I enjoyed relaxing at home all day, skipping social outings. In fact, my parents thought I was going through depression. But I explained that after eight years, I was finally glad to do nothing. I loved the peace
and quiet.

Is marriage on the cards?
I've got far too many marriage proposals, but not from men (laughs). They've all been from their mothers, who want a bahu like Akshara [her last character]. I will marry when I'm ready. I still have a few years before that.
