Malashri who plays the title role in Kannadada Kiran Bedi, sidesteps controversy and claims strong-willed women inspired director Omprakash

Kannadada Kiran Bedi, directed by Omprakash, is due for release later this month. Malashri, who plays the title role, tells HiT LiST what it meant to play the tough cop on screen.

What is highlight point of the film?
It's an out and out action film. I play an energetic character. The plot has an interesting twist, which I cannot reveal for obvious reasons. Vishnu has done a great job with the camera. I'm sure the audience will enjoy Paniraj's stunts and Hamsalekha's music.

What kind of preparation went into the role?
I had to build my stamina as I was expected to do heavy-duty action scenes.u00a0 I trained rigorously and worked out religiously. I concentrated on the emoting part as well because my character goes through a whole spectrum of emotions.

Any comments on the film's title?
The director (Omprakash) was inspired by powerful and strong-willed women. His film is a reflection of that inspiration. He has made the film with me in mind. The film is not based on one particular personality, character or incident.

Aren't you tired of playing cop?
(Smiles) My fans tell me they enjoy seeing me in uniform! My friends say that I'm perfect for such roles. They rate my roles in films such as SP Bhargavi, Lady Commissioner and Durgi very high. Having said that, I want to add that I would love to try out all kinds of roles.

Don't glamour doll roles entice you?
I am not excited by such roles because they take you nowhere as an actor.u00a0

You've been in movies for over two decades. Has the industry changed for the better?
Technically, movie making has made great strides. Newcomers now have more opportunities to train and learn the nuances of the craft than we did. There is more competition but, on the flip side, the dedication from actors is missing.

The 'instant' culture is creeping into films. Films are churned out in less than 20 days, so quality suffers.u00a0u00a0
